The History of ProQares
ProQares originated as part of the research institute TNO: the Netherlands Organisation for Applied Scientific Research. Established in 1932, TNO focuses on making knowledge in various fields applicable to businesses and governments.
In 2010, ProQares became an independent entity, building on the scientific expertise and reputation of TNO. As of 9 January 2026, ProQares has again become part of TNO, continuing as an autonomous company within the TNO organization. This step enables ProQares to further develop its specialized expertise and facilities while strengthening TNO’s position in the fields of resilience, safety and defence.
ProQares is an independent Dutch test laboratory, specialized in testing personal and collective CBRN protective equipment. ProQares is ISO/IEC 17025 accredited (registration number: L543) and provides a wide range of standardized and tailor-made testing services using state-of-the-art facilities, supporting the safety of people and the environment.
The name ‘ProQares’ is a blend of ‘Protection’, ‘Quality’, and ‘Ares’, the Greek god of war. Our name embodies our mission: ensuring the quality of protective equipment for those who protect others or who face toxic and life-threatening chemicals in their daily work.
